The Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center at the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology is one of the largest MS clinics in the Midwest. Our Center staff is dedicated to:
1) providing the best possible care to persons with multiple sclerosis, 2) helping in the diagnosis and evaluation of persons suspected of having MS, and 3) furthering the treatment and management of persons with MS by participation in research trials of new therapies and procedures.
Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center Providers
The MS Treatment and Research Center is under the direction of Gary Birnbaum, M.D., who has extensive experience in the care and diagnosis of persons with MS, as well as experience in basic and clinical MS research. Jane Iverson, R.N., M.S.C.N. works closely with Dr. Birnbaum in managing and caring for persons with MS.
Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center Services
Also working closely with Dr. Birnbaum are several other Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology neurologists, whose expertise in Evoked Response testing, MRI and neurophysiology support the diagnostic program of the Center. Patients have access to a comprehensive physical therapy department with expertise in assisting with mobility in persons with MS, aiding in the control of incontinence and instructing persons with MS in exercise programs to maximize their physical abilities and reduce fatigue. The Center also works closely with physicians and other health professionals involved in the care of an individual with MS, to ensure that a complete program of health management is achieved.
Unreimbursed services and professional education are supported with a grant award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter.
Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center Research
In an effort to improve the lives of those living with multiple sclerosis, the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center is continually involved in multiple sclerosis clinical trials.
Publication: "Combining Beta Interferon and Atorvastatin May Increase Disease Activity in Multiple Sclerosis" by Dr. Gary Birnbaum, MS Treatment and Research Center Director, Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology, and Dr. Irfan Altafullah, Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology, was published in the October 28, 2008 journal Neurology.
