Peripheral neuropathy includes symptoms of numbness, tingling, pain and burning, most commonly in the hands and feet. It can be caused by traumatic injury or pressure to a nerve, infections, metabolic problems, kidney and liver disease, exposure to toxins, alcoholism, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12) and, commonly, diabetes. Persons are encouraged to seek medical care if tingling, weakness or pain in the hands or feet is noticed.
We provide physical therapy treatment options to help control peripheral neuropathy symptoms and prevent further damage to the peripheral nerves, such as use of modalities (heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, etc.), exercises for balance and strengthening, massage/manual therapy and recommendations for cessation of smoking and alcohol use. As much as possible, we recommend avoiding prolonged pressure to a body part, such as leaning on the elbows or crossing the legs. We also recommend avoiding repetitive motions and cramped positions, as these can also cause nerve irritation.
